The full details of the requirements are now clearer.  The problem is
easier in my case, since my files and LMS reside on the same system.

For a remote set of files, path prefixes need to be transformed, as per
Roland0's reply.  This isn't difficult.

The LMS command line seems to have a rescan for a given path:

So, it seems possible to have a script / program invoke on an editor on
a (possibly transformed) file path, and upon exit of that app, cause LMS
to rescan that file's folder.  Again, I have not tested this workflow.
