I expect you could use it like that, although it's much larger and more
expensive (and probably more fragile) than an iPod Shuffle or other
flash-based portable players that are available on the market
(including mobile phones). Some of the possible uses within home
network range are lounging by the backyard pool, out on the patio, in
the hammock, when mowing the lawn or gardening, etc. These could be
with headphones or with powered speakers. I used to unplug my SB2 from
my hifi and drag it outside with powered speakers for evenings on the
patio, but an SBC player + powered speakers would be less hassle.

Some people are jazzed about streaming tunes in public wifi hotspots,
although the mental image of a few dozen people sitting in a Starbucks
all listening to the same tune through their isolating earbuds just
strikes me as weird.
