socketwrapper only runs on the SC systems - so enabling it on the
desktop will not do anything.

I am not familiar with WHS but I cannot imagine that there is no
firewall as it is a networked device.  

If socketwrapper is the problem - it is strange that no other users
have encountered the problem but perhaps it is a security policy
setting on your WHS and you may have chosen a stricter policy than
usual. 

Since you are unable to examine the security setting, a  suggestion
would be to upgrade to a 7.3.2 nightly as this has removed the use of
socketwrapper for many transcoding.  I think this includes WMA but not
AlienBBC.  However there is always the possibility that upgrading may
bring other issues.
