I find this forum community to be one of the most helpful I've dealt
with in 20+ years of using internet "interest group" connections. Lots
of issues get handled very well by users helping each other. Users get
more help typically when they provide useful info about their setups,
etc. People that come here to just rant ("All this stuff is crap")
don't get much help but they're really not asking for help. But even in
some of these caes I've seen 100s of very helpful threads where users
stick with the original poster to help solve problems.
I've used SqueezePlay for two years to control my other SB hardware
players and as a "player" on my laptop. It has been rock solid, despite
being BETA. So I'm not sure what problem you're having. But post your
questions and I'm sure you'll get answers.
I'm not sure I understand your point about "no reliable software other
than the server software." Of course, one has to use the server
software. That's how the thing works. You have 3 choices for a server.
Your own (running SbS), the "cloud" server (mysqueezebox.com), or the
"tiny SbS" inside the TOUCH (a limited server). I use SbS in one
location and mysb.com in another. I have a transporter, several
Touches, several booms, and I've had the duet and SB3 (now retired). I
go months and months with rock solid setup and have rarely had any
issues (that I didn't cause with a network issue unrelated to SB). And
I use most of Erland's plugins and SDT plugin and they work
beautifully.
Bottom line, my SB setup at two different locations is more stable than
my Comcast or Cox cable TV, my computer network at work (a very large
organization with dedicated IT folks), etc. Just to be clear, I'm not
suggesting that there aren't bugs, problems, etc. There certainly are.
My personal experience on this forum is that 90% of the problems are
the user's network not being robust (which they may not discover until
trying to stream music or video). Another 5% is bad tagging on files.
But I think it is unfair to suggest that the software is "junk" and
nothing really works properly. It all works properly for me and for
many people. The forum users are actually here to help others diagnose
issues and offer solutions. And this does work based on my experience
here.
