Nope, you're confused by my confusing use of Spotify's terminology :-).
You're right, you can't follow an album.
I don't think there is such a thing as "following" an album, just
"following" an artist. To clarify, what I'm asking for (and what the
Android/desktop apps seem to do) is that if I add an album to My
Library, the corresponding list of artists will also be browsable such
that I can then view the albums by that artist which have been added to
My Library. This behavior seems unrelated to whether the artist is
"followed" or not.
I asked my contact at Spotify's. They don't intend to implement that
behaviour in the API. They "...currently scope it to explicitly followed
artists on the API as it relates to a separate distinct bucket of
data.". They've added it to their feature request list. I'm sure it's a
long list.
