I don't think paid membership would work because legal issues .
Logitechs legally binding contracts with thier service providers is
about providing services to squeezeboxes it would probably be a
nightmare to re negotiate . Especially if you can't really specify what
kind of player or service migth be at the other end or where .

The problem is not only "dB issues" .How to solve the problem with non
squeezebox players registered to mysb.com without removing them ? ;)
this a part of the actual problem ,by now there must been a substantial
amount of these kinds of players ? Suppose they let it slide when the
problem was tiny compared to the real players .
But now there is a real risk getting into trouble with thier service
providers , they probably don't like a systems that streams to anything
that's says hi :) and can not be expected to provide free infrastructure
for other commercial entities .

Besides some must have been living under a rock . I've had squeezeboxes
for close to a decade now and I always known that mysqueezebox.com is
for real squeezeboxes sold by slimdevices or Logitech and it has been a
fluke that the soft players has been joining the ride .
