OK, I think I found part of the problem.................
We have an ancient Slim P3 that we still actually use. (It is a long story, and it is mainly as a display, so we don't have the use the annoying remote that comes with the Duet. I'll leave it at that. Along with we have all the WiFi stuff disabled.) So...............the problem seems to be when we try to do something, with a regular remote, on that old Slim P3. That is when it tells us "you have to be a subscriber, blah, blah, blah............." Now here is where it gets sticky. It seems the Slim P3 is registered to a different account. (Don't ask why we have more than one.) So, deleted that one from the other account, so we can move it to the one we have everything on now. Except we can't. Can not connect it to mysqueezebox.com because it needs to be a newer model. (Well, that is a surprise. It used to talk to that site, or else it never would have been registered.) And when we try to do anything with it...................."this device is registered to another account.............delete it from that account.................etc.". Well, you get the picture.
