Hello everybody. I would like some help to resolve a queer problem that
my squid proxy cache has : every few minutes ( not a regular interval )
, the
clients' pc's are unable to connect to the proxy server. The message
simply states
that the browser could not reach the proxy server. Since most of the
clients
are on a private subnet, it is impossible for them to browse without a
proxy.
I have used the proxy server ( squid version 1.2 , then 2.0 ) for
roughly a year,
with no problems. When the problems started last week, I tried to
upgrading
to version 2.1 PATCH2 . I ran the upgraded version on port 3128 in
parallel
with my regular proxy ( which sits on 8080 ) . The one on 3128 worked
well,
so I made it the main proxy by changing it's port to 8080. Unfortunately
, It now
seems to bet suffering from the same fate as it's predecessor :-((.
I am running on a Sun Netra workstation running solaris.
I have only about 300 clients accessing the cache, and the cachemgr
script
reports that I receive about 45 HTTP requests per minute , which is not
much !
Does anyone know what can be causing these random outages ?
What process is it that actually listens on the port for http requests
?could that
process be hanging every so often ?

I would appreciate any help rendered, as my boss is beginning to mutter
about the old netscape proxy that "never gave us these problems " !

Many thanks,

Jay
