Admission: $6 general; $4 members, alumni, seniors, students, and disabled; SFAI students free ----- JANET KOPLOS has made a substantial contribution to the critical discourse on contemporary sculpture and crafts in over 2000 published articles and reviews written since 1976. A senior editor at Art in America since 1990, recent articles of hers include "Martin Puryear's 'Ars Poetica,'" "a Pilgrim's Projects" (Abraham David Christian), "Stasis and Agitation" (Ursula von Rydingsvard), and "On Site: Ellen Driscoll's Passages." A resident of Tokyo from 1984-89, she has also written extensively on Japanese sculpture, architecture, and crafts, and is the author of Contemporary Japanese Sculpture (Abbeville Press, 1991). Her Art Institute lecture, Contemporary Japanese Art: From Rocks to Rockets, will look at the extraordinary range of materials and subjects in contemporary Japanese art and the influence of tradition and technology. ----- ZAP is the first episode in the SFAI Artist Committee's 2002 Salon Series, INFLUENCE, presented on three Friday evenings in February and March. The series will consist of three theme-based panels with a dynamic combination of personalities. Each evening will feature a host, and traditional and non- traditional artists in a variety of media. The panels will include an interview/inquiry between artists and host, inviting audience participation. While investigating the boundaries of each art discipline, the series also seeks to push the boundaries of the salon forum itself. ZAP: ART AND TECHNOLOGY: Much like the companies that once hired them, San Francisco's artists working with technology face change in the post-dot.com age. As the world of the technological artist matures, should the relationship between art and technology be readdressed? To what degree is technology still a new medium for artists to explore, and to what degree does technology influence, limit, or even dictate the content of art? Participants: Gail White, conceptual artist; Ken Goldberg, artist and professor of robotics, UC Berkeley; Lisa Jevbratt, systems/network artist; and Robert Riley, research curator, Nevada Museum of Art The final event in 2002 SALON SERIES is: Friday, March 8 NOW: CURRENT EVENTS AND ART PRACTICES Participants: Scott Kildall, media activist and co-founder of Sleeping Giant Productions; Ed Kashi, photojournalist; Andrea Lewis, writer, media activist, and co-host of KPFA Morning Show; and Julio Morales, artist.
