PRESS CREDIBILITY & THE 2004 ELECTIONS

A FREE public dialog event for all Bay Area citizens ...

Newsdesk.org presents an unusual opportunity to speak directly with newsroom
decision-makers during this singular election season.

Editors from KQED radio, the Oakland Tribune, San Francisco Chronicle, San Francisco
Examiner and San Jose Mercury News will be available for dialog and Q&A with the
general public, discussing press credibility, and the methods, challenges and
responsibilities of journalism.

The democratic process is more than voting -- it's the practice and tradition of public
participation. Please join us for this "community conversation" with your local news
media, and bring your hopes and concerns to the table.

Wine and finger-food reception to follow the discussion.

PANELISTS:

John Diaz, Editorial Page Editor
San Francisco Chronicle

Kevin Keane, Executive Editor
The Oakland Tribune (invited)

Deirdre Hussey, City Editor
San Francisco Examiner

Matt Mansfield, Deputy Managing Editor
San Jose Mercury News

Raul Ramirez, News Director
KQED radio

Moderator: William Woo, Stanford University; former
Editor-in-Chief, St. Louis Post-Dispatch

The San Francisco Bay Area edition of the Associated Press Managing Editors Credibility
Roundtable program will emphasize dialog between news producers and news readers,
rather than ex cathedra pronouncements by the panelists.

The topic of discussion is press credibility, accountability and Election 2004 coverage.
The intent is to spur a "community conversation" that will reaffirm the mission and
standards of news media during this crucial time for American democracy; and that will
strengthen the relationship between newsroom decision-makers and the active,
engaged, conscientious audience.

Produced by Newsdesk.org for the Associated Press Managing Editors and the Online
News Association. Sponsored by the World Affairs Council and the Berkeley Graduate
School of Journalism.
