  Your SMTP server isn't running, or your config is pointing to the
  wrong location, *or* if you're using RedHat straight out of the box,
  and are pointing SquirrelMail to the external interface (not
  localhost) then Sendmail will not be listening. RedHat's default
  setup for sendmail is to listen on localhost only.  Check the
  following details:

    - Can you telnet to port 25?
    - What does your conf.pl script report for your SMTP server?
    - Do you have a firewall running?
