Found out what the problem was, it was that the "top level" folders were
not subscribed. Evidently my other mail client (mozilla 1.4) does not
require subscription  to folders which only contain folders, if the
subfolders are subscribed.

Actually, in general I don't use subscription to folders , there is just
an assumption that everything in ~/mail/ is a folder... The reason for
this is that I am in an environment where people like to use both imap
and shell-based mail clients, and those clients will create mail folders
in ~/mail/ but not add them to the subscription list.

so it sure would be nice to have an option which could be toggled in SM
like mozilla does: "show only subscribed folders"  If I could set this
to false by default in my environment, it would be sweet...
