It's not just the file that needs permissions.  See:

do you see httpd?  if so, apache is running.

SquirrelMail only knows what you tell it.  We're still working on the
module that reads your mind.  Instead, take a look at the multilogin or
vlogin plugins, as they may be useful to you:
