chmod -R is even better, BUT you should only do that for testing!  Do
NOT leave it that way!

that might be an issue of who you are logged in as, try checking from
root.

what do you mean?  You go to the SM URL and what happens?  If it's a
blank page, then you *are* getting SM, but there may be php errors.  In
general, check your php installation and configuration to make sure it
is also set up correctly.

nah, you'll find it's a lot more straight forward and more logical than
windoze once you make it over the learning curve.
