Actually, I was going to suggest that he look at his SquirrelMail
configuration for the reasons you stated.  This sounds like he may have SM
configured to use SMTP to send messages directly.

John - you probably want to make sure SM is using sendmail (run config.pl,
select "2. Server Settings" and make sure option 4 is set to Sendmail and
option 5 points to your sendmail program).  Then you need to check your
sendmail.cf to make sure that you have a SmartHost defined so that all
mail outside of your box is forwarded to your ISP's mail server for
delivery.
