Thanks for the tips...  I should have clarified IMAP.

It won't be hosted on the box (that's why imapproxy), so I don't think
HD sizes should be an issue.  Imap servers (3 of them actually) are
AHEM... PMDF on VMS boxes. (You can tell that it's not my call, right ?)

Most users are students (5000+ out of the 7000), who already have their
own email somewhere else, so they use ours just for class projects, and
stuff.  And since we don't give them that much storage space, they stick
to their own email providers (mostly AOL).

Also, we allow them direct access to our imap servers, so most use their
own clients.  SM is set up as a convenience to access from public
terminals and/or labs.

I'd look at pricing on a dual Xeon box.  This P4 is hyperthreading
enabled though (and configured at $3750).  

I'm also tempted on a Sun v20z:
2x Opteron 248, 4 GB DDR, 2x36 U320 10K HDs (Raid 1) at around $4200
(plus support)
