Thanks!  I don't know how I missed that ... or perhaps I thought I'd try 4.0.6 and 
seeing as it worked (seemed to), just kept up with it
until the attachment problem showed up.   I've installed 4.1.2-7.0.6 from the redhat 
errata above (RHSA-2002-213).

This eliminates the PHP errors but (you knew there would be a but) ...  I still can't 
download attachments, still when I click on 
the attachment name it displays  in the browser (IE 6).  I've heard this is an IE 
problem, but I have gone into Windows Explorer and
"browse in same window" isn't even an option for PDF files on my machine (it's greyed 
out).   When I select download, I still get the
wrong default file name ... I change it to "filename.pdf" and select "all Files" for 
file type, but the downloaded file is still corrupted according to Acrobat Reader.

I haven't experimented with other attachments since upgrading php  (such as .doc and 
.xls both of which didn't work before either).
