I'm running SM against the Oracle Collaboration SUite - an IMAP4 server using the Oracle RDBMS as the message store.
I have the 1.4.3.a version running on Redhat ES3.0 with 512M. The php.ini has the memory increased from 8M to 32M. It works very well.
However the one thing that appears slow is initial login. I'm using my account which has 2500 mails in the INBOX and around 100 folders, some nested.
I assumed the problem was the INBOX size, but I tried the plugin to have a different initial folder, choosing one with only a few emails. Same problem and in fact when I selected my inbox it opened in 8 seconds, pretty good especially as it's 5000 miles away from the server.
In addition to Jay's ideas, you should try out 1.5.1, since it has vastly improved performance in this regard. Also, I am not sure, but the startup folder plugin might change folders only after SM has already looked at the INBOX.. can't remember, but it's a possibility.
