If it is a symlink, apache may lack the right to follow the link.
There is a config-option for apache like this:

   <Directory "/path/to/some/dir">
       Options SymLinksifOwnerMatch
   </Directory>

Or maybe

   <Directory "/path/to/some/dir">
       Options FollowSymLinks
   </Directory>

If this option is not set for the parent-directory of the link, than
apache will not use the link.

Well here is the thing. The link is only there so that i can update squirrelmail when there is an update available in portage. the actual server config is specified to use the hard, actual parent directory; no symlinks.

This is why im so confused, its a normal configuration.

Regards ..

Leonard
