On many systems, this is an /etc/rc.d/init.d issue. Even among some Linux
distributions, this changes. Moreover, if root decides to part from the
distro, you are really hosed. Personally, I got really annoyed with the
Caldera banner and replaced it with my own stuff that does a few other
things as well. It looks like this;

Since I've rewritten the startup and login scripts, most efforts to use them
will fail. Although this isn't that common a practice, it is common enough
to be aware of.
