Hi Steve,

The IP cylinders are nicely made...I could never make anything that works as
fine But...

When I first get the cylinders look in the ends of the distribution block I
have had them were they are partially blocked with brass scarf...careful
twidle with a suitable size drill does great things for the running
properties

...also I put all my new IP cylinders in a contaier with some dish soap and
pump them a few times under the water surface...all sorts of bits and metal
filings can be found in the bottom of the container upon removal of the
cylinder...then oil them up and you are ready to go.

IP replacement "O" rings are made of a high temp red material...I belive the
originals in mine were a grey/black colour...the originals in mine wore to a
"D" section...that is the surface sliding on the cylinder walls was worn
flatish...my friend and I got a bunch of the new reds and really like the
sealing properties...IP were aware that some of the old "O" rings were
wearing...I have replaced the "O" rings in all my IP's when they have come
due for service. Most of my cylinders have many hours of steaming.

...you may have a good seal with oil but steam is a whole different
thing...I have had locos run sweet on air but horrible on steam.

That little step in the cylinder has me pondering...unless the "O" ring had
completely wore down to metal?? ....an abrupt step me thinks was a glitch
in the original machining...maybe the bore tool picked in the machining.

...is it all the way around on the inside with a sharp step? ...if it is I
would get in touch with IP for the last word on that...sounds like the step
is cutting the "O" rings...I think it is a manufacturing problem...they are
nice folks...upon hearing the problem they just might ship you a new
cylinder.

...also they make the 1/8" "O" rings for the Reversing valve...the old black
ones go hard and flat...they stay sealed but if you take out the steam pipes
for any reason a leak is a for sure...there new replacement ones are springy
red like the cylinder ones...and they stay springy ...I have red ones in all
mine and my friends wobblers.

Have you had them from new...if not then someone might have been in there?

Tony
