Hi Steve,

The gaskets that came with the IP cylinders were quite different than the
Mamod...

...that is not good...

With the attached picture you can see what IP did...the Mamod cylinder
blocks had NO steam passages...they relied on the gaskets to perform the
steam distribution...it saved extra machining costs.
The IP in their wisdom put the distribution into the block as machined
grooves...AND this is were I think your problem is...IP cylinders came with
a flat gasket with no steam channels...the gasket ran right accross the
steam cut outs...the original gasket material was tempremental at best...it
was sort of plastized so that steam would not swell and have the gasket
block the steam passage...I too made paper gaskets to their design and the
paper dissolved...if you still have the old IP gaskets they fell apart and
little black bits got into everthing...yes air would get through but send in
some hot oily steam and everything would swell up and cause your
problems...if you are running flat gaskets with out the steam passages I
think that is the problem.

As long as the fuel is not spiting and crackeling...the sign of water in the
fuel...I would not bother.

There is many different meths type fuels out their and yes some do work and
burn cleaner with wonderful smells but some of the petrolium distillates
smell horrible when burning...I could fill volumes on what the proper fuel
one should use in "Meths" fired locos...

See the attached picture and see the differance in those blocks...I think
the problem will be under those blocks...
