So, after conducting some "observations" this afternoon, I have concluded that the axle pump is more of a load than my loco can handle in its current configuration. I have two choices : make the fire bigger, or increase the cylinder bore (there are undoubtedly other options, of which I am sure to hear). So my question is: would increasing the cylinder bore increase or decrease steam consumption under load? The idea is that increasing the cylinder bore would increase the work that could be done with a given amount of steam. Or would the increased swept area just increase the steam consumption?
