Dear All, I did some calculation (actually a simplified CAD geometry model) as to the actual wheel taper required for small gauges and worked out that it needed something like 12 degrees for the self centering effect to work on the sorts of track radius we use.
So the 1:20 taper is visually nice to have but will only work on straight track (or the very gentlest of curves). For most curves the wheels will be going around the corners on the flanges. Empirical information can probably be derived simply by inspecting the wear marks on frequently used locomotives/stock.
