Today I came into posession of the 14th. edition of "Ropers Handbook of The Locomotive", published in 1890. It is in excellent condition, leather bound with gold impressed drawings on the leather slip closed outer cover. Flyleaf hand written "Property of W. A. Crooker Centralia Ills (previous handwritten in ink) in pencil "S.C. No. 709-01-9076 - he was apparently the first owner. In smaller ink handwriting : H. M. Christian Employed by I.C. Jan. 2nd 1906 Promoted Nov. 5 - 1912
The book measures 4.25" x 6" x 1" thick and has 396 pages. I've not been able to read much of the text yet, but just glancing through it impresses me that there is a heck of a lot of information contained in it - definately more than what I have in my head concerning running live steam loco's. If anyone has ever heard of this book, or the other 11 books written by Mr. Roper about various subjects related the locomotives and Rail Roads in the 1800"s, please let me know. I'd also like to find out what it might be worth - the local bookstore could not find a recent sale listed for it. - somehow that does not really suprise me..... Keep your steam up!
