Hi, Craig.
I'm sure you meant that you don't need the bleeding edge just to get the
sound off a 78, but consider:
1.  There are subtleties RECORDED on 78s never heard on the original
Flinstone play-back equipment: for instance, out-of-phase ambience
(information for surround sound), and lots of bass.  BUT you have to recover
them first.  Good hardware will get them for you.
2.  There is a lot of stuff ADDED to 78s through time like hiss, pops and
scratches that can be cleaned up by modern software.  A decent home version
would be Toast Platinum.
If you have half-decent records, you'll be amazed!
