Hi Gaylene,
I had a similar problem, bot an Apple 24x from a G3 on ebay for about 
$25, opened the case (4 screws on back, slide one-piece top/sides 
back so I could see flat fingers holding front panel on, loosened 
them, tilted front panel off, unplugged the multi-pin gray ribbon 
data cable black plug, unplugged
the white 4-wire power cable plug, unplugged the 2-wire sound cable, 
took out two screws on each side, removed old CD drive, slid Apple 
in, replaced screws,  plugs in appropriate sockets,and deleted 3rd 
party CD driver and installed Apple CD driver. Tried it out with case 
off worked fine,put case back together and it is  still working fine. 
I can now startup with Norton or any other CD disk.
