The answer is that Motorola used CD-ROM drives of different makes in
StarMax computers, consequently some of us have difficulties when
using a CD as a Startup disk - or when installing an OS from 8
upwards. (The Teac 16X SCSI or Hitachi 8X ATAPI CD-ROM drives are but
two that cause difficulties.)

The reason for the difficulty is that the Apple CD-ROM extension
installed by Mac OS 8 upwards cannot 'drive' these drives.

StarMaxers with these drives will have had to follow Motorola's
advice and use the CD-ROM extension from Mac OS 7.5.3 if running OS
8.0 and 8.1. They could also use a third party CD extension such as
FWB's CD-ROM Toolkit.

Other list members have suggested tweaking Apple's CD-ROM extension
with the appropriate software (not for the faint hearted), or else
changing the drive for one that is compatible with Apple's CD-ROM
extension.
