If you are running OS 8.5 or later, you can boot normally and run the 
installer from the CD.   I'd recommend booting from a limited 
extension set such as 'OS x.x base' so any Virus softare you have 
installed is disabled.   If you only have 1 partition, make sure to 
do a 'Clean Install'.   It is available from the 'Options' menu if I 
remember correctly.   From the description of you problem, you have 
one of the OEM CD's that is not compatible with Apple's drivers, so 
you will need to make sure you have an update to the CD driver before 
you start the install process.
