I don't believe that the following information pertains to this particular CD-ROM problem however, as there are still people using FWB's software on their StarMax, it might be a good time to point out a rather major issue concerning the FWB software.
I believe that I came across this information on the FWB's web site but I also remember reading about it somewhere else. It caught my attention because at the time, there was no known recovery short of sending your computer back to Motorola. So, for what it is worth, here it is what the "special bulletin" said ..... There is a known problem with FWB Hard Disk Toolkit (v2.0.x) for all Tanzania motherboard based computers when creating more than one volume on certain IDE hard drives. The hard drives affected are: Seagate Medalist Pro Model ST36450A and ST52520A, Seagate Cabo ST31276A, Western Digital Caviar 22500, 21600, and 22100. After installing the FWB driver and partitioning the drive into two or more volumes, the system will not boot from any attached system volume --- including a bootable CD-ROM. There is no simple way to recover from this situation and FWB strongly recommends that the above drives are initialized only as single volumes. FWB Hard Disk Toolkit version 2.5 corrected this problem but there was a charge for the upgrade. Thankfully, Apple finally produced a drive setup utility that could handle IDE drives (I know that Apple's Hard Drive Setup v1.7.3 can partition IDE drives without any problems). In any case, if for some reason you are still using FWB's HDT v2.0.x, you might want to keep this partitioning issue in mind.
