This was not a matter of trying to get the computer to boot off the CD ROM drive, either (as I replaced the original CD drive with an Apple blessed drive). I was given the message that I could not install the OS on this particular computer. I was able to install OS 9 after I obtained an non-machine specific OS 9 installer though. All the same, you will encounter troubles upgrading from OS 7 if you still have the original CD ROM drive. This issue has been discussed in great detail here. Actually, Motorola has explicit instructions about getting around this particular problem. Search both sites and you will find the answers.
