Hmmmm .... and I found that my iBook OS 9 CD did not work for my StarMax. 
This was not a matter of trying to get the computer to boot off the CD ROM 
drive, either (as I replaced the original CD drive with an Apple blessed 
drive). I was given the message that I could not install the OS on this 
particular computer. I was able to install OS 9 after I obtained an 
non-machine specific OS 9 installer though.

All the same, you will encounter troubles upgrading from OS 7 if you still 
have the original CD ROM drive. This issue has been discussed in great detail 
here. Actually, Motorola has explicit instructions about getting around this 
particular problem. Search both sites and you will find the answers.
