One trick you can try if you just can't get it booted is to boot off the
HD like normal, and get the CD mounted. Then, drag the Finder out of
your current System Folder to the desktop, the HD, or just somewhere
else. The little MacOS icon should disappear. Then, rename the System
Folder to Previous System Folder or something similar, pull up the CD,
and install from there. In theory, this should work. I've done it
several times. Only trouble is the critical period between unblessing
the System Folder and getting the new one installed. Any
crashes/restarts in there gives you an unbootable system. If you're
having trouble booting off the CD, I'd have a boot floppy of some sort
handy. That way you can put the Finder back in the old System Folder and
get booted back up again.

Hope this helps!

It's my understanding that in order to install new operating system,
it's best to boot up from something other than the hard drive one
wants to upgrade. So I really hesitate to do that.
