Hi Kari et al - Thanks so much for your help. I am back online but
still struggling with the CD booting problem.

I have tried booting 3 different ways and none of them works:
(with the C key; with the command, option, delete, shift keys down;
and by selecting the CD as my startup disk from the control panels).

if I leave the FWB cdrom toolkit extension in place when doing this,
I get, after a long hang at the smiley mac, an error message saying
that there's a conflict with FWB cd-rom toolkit.

if I turn off the toolkit extension, the startup hangs at the smiley
mac for a long time without going to "welcome to macintosh". but
after awhile, it will boot up from my hard drive as normal.

in short, I still cannot boot from the CD.
someone suggested updating my CD driver. Can you please tell me
where I can find a driver update? I have the original 8x ATAPI
cd-rom drive that came with my computer in 1997, and my best
recollection tells me it's made by Hitachi (but how do I tell for
certain)?

thanks again,

Jillian
