Hi Gary Good questions. I haven't done this myself but I'll take a shot in the dark and others will correct me if I'm wrong. :-) I don't think you need the card to get stereo but you may need one anyway.
I believe the SM will accept stereo in it's built in sound (no card) but you have to amplify the incoming signal to line levels. My Denon turntable has a built in amp or typically you might use your stereo or something from RadioShack. You need the proper cables. You'll need CD burning software like Toast which comes with Spin Doctor in the full version which could be useful for scratchy vinyl; or is SoundStudio good for that? You'll need the CD burner of course and the proper hookup there so maybe you need a USB or FW card? You'll probably want to be running OS 8.6 or preferably 9; you can still get SoundJam at versiontracker btw for encoding and playing MP3s and it's great with Toast to turn playlists into CD lists. Any ways, I have a Creative Labs SoundBlaster PCI card in my G4 that would fit the bill but I don't think I've ever read or heard anything too good about them except that they usually work (as mine does) but has a crummy driver but they're cheap. You could probably find one on eBay for less than $50. Aside from that, the cards get expensive. The SoundStudio site has a hardware compatibility list, have you seen that? MacWorld magazine has had articles addressing these very issues, you can search their site for "converting LPs" or something like that. Hope this helps, keep in touch with the project.
