The built-in sound in is stereo 16 bit and supports 44.1 KHz sampling which is CD quality. I am not sure how good the distortion is, but for personal use it is probably acceptable. The one issue in your setup is the most phonographs only supply phono level output and the audio input is Line level. You will need a phono to line level pre-amp, or a full amp to generate the line level signal. The other issue is to make sure you have the StarMax Sound Fix installed in your system folder. On my G3 upgraded SM, this was absolutely necessary otherwise the audio input would cut out mid recording.
