There are two kinds of people in the world. Those who have replaced their batteries and those who are about to. Perhaps they'll sell their machine to someone else first--who then become the about to.

I have had my 5500/200 for going on 8 years now. I have always had it
set up so that I could turn it ON and Off from the keyboard. This means
the 110 volt plug is always hot -- the battery is being trickle
charged. If not, it would have died a long time ago.

The battery in a computer serves a different function then one in a flashlight. In a flashlight, they run down and die and we can use rechargeable ones in their place. That recharging restores the voltage and the ampacity (the ability to produce amps that heat the filament in the bulb.). BUT, those rechargeable batteries have a very clear recycle life; they can only be used X or so, times, and then all the recharging in the universe makes no difference.

PRAM needs voltage to be maintained and keep its internal numbers accurate. The battery probably leaks more internal current constantly, than is needed by PRAM. The trickle charger concept is fine if you want it, but it is really and most decidedly irrelevant.

The battery might try to start the machine if the key was punched while the machine was unplugged. And, the start-up try would be only while the key or button was depressed. But nothing happens because the power supply can't turn on as instructed. Not plugged in.

That's why there's a separate 5 v. circuit for the ABD configuration. When the 5v is on, the key can instruct a start-up. with the PRAM instructions, and the PS can start up its power to the motherboard and peripherals. No plug in, no separate 5v;

Maybe I missed where this thread started, but I've never replaced the battery or pushed any cuda switch in my starmax 5500/200 ever since day one. I keep it plugged in unless I'm moving furniture. I turn it on from the keyboard, it crashes once in a while, not much, has 2 internal hard drives, an external modem, a scanner, a burner, printer connected, original CDrom drive works with the old 7.6 extension. The only thing I've ever replaced is the hard drive in my 2 year old iMac cuz it died. Even my performa from 95 still works, same battery. KOW! :)

on me regularly, I have never had to do anything but push the reset
button to get it back on. I have three hard drives hooked into it with
about 50 jillion programs. It has probably got at least five sets of
start-up info stored in it here and there. I would crash too if
overloaded like that. Bottom line, STARMAXES, at least 5500s trickle
charge their batteries and if treated properly and no infant mortatitly,
the battery will last far beyond the expected useful life to the
machine. Motorola builds good shit (or at least used to).
