I never did have any problem with this card, just installed the driver
rebooted OS 8.6, selected Ethernet in the AppleTalk Control Panel, &
flew. Was connected to a Cable Modem, though. Upon moving & installing
newer OS's, I still have never had a problem with device recognition or
selecting Ethernet in the AppleTalk Control Panel with or without
anything (hub or modem) connected.

However, I've experience the same problem, as you, with a 'Custom' CC II,
OS 7.6.1. I tried a Farallon PDS Ethernet Card & driver & a genuine Apple
LC series PDS card that needs no driver. Neither card would allow me to
even select Ethernet in the AppleTalk Control Panel without an error. So,
I will try connecting to a hub first & see what happens. This may be a
card specific thing.
