With DSL the setup is pretty simple.  Just add a Switch to the output 
of your DSL modem and then plug in any computer to the the Switch. 
Apparently a router or hub will give you more security than a Switch 
but I am not sure about the difference other than the Switch is a lot 
cheaper.

Setup as follows.  Incoming line to the DSL modem.  Straight thru CAT 
5 network cable from the Modem to the Switch.  Straight thru CAT 5 
network cables from the Switch to the ethernet connection on each 
computer.  Don't use a crossover cable except to connect a computer 
directly to the DSL modem.

I have a Belkin 5 port Switch which allows us to plug in 4 computers. 
All can access the internet at the same time, and all can be set up 
to share files between computers.
