Sounds like it may not be your hard drive. Take the cover off and see if one of the fans is making that noise. If a fan were to stop the computer would start to overheat and would lockup or do strange things. Is it more likely to behave strangely after being on for an hour or more? Is the air blowing out the back of the power supply cool, warm or hot?
