Indeed, a dead battery or even one below the required voltage is a most likely cause for your SM not booting.
I'm not familiar with your model of SM. But if it's anything like mine, a 3000/160 and is a desktop model, then there's a little 'hard-to-find-as-hell' button on the mother board that you have to press with something like a pen in order to reset the machine. Once done, it should start - providing the battery is still good.

My SM 2000 250 will not start. I hear the chime and drive spinning. Monitor stays dark. After about 5 seconds -- nothing. Monitor says "no signal," then goes to sleep mode. I tried inserting boot disk and holding C key-- also tried P-RAM. Nada. I have never replaced the clock battery. Would a dead battery cause this behavior? My intuition is that it is a hardware problem. (OS 9.2, 30 GB HD, 128 ram, USB card, ethernet card.)
