Hi Jim,

I've the same CPU running OS 9.1 with 32MB of RAM and virtual memory turned on - it's required in order to run. Honestly, it's not bad, in fact it's not that slow for what I'm using it for.

So I would tend to agree with and support Wayne's point about CPU specific versions of Mac OS's. I'm pretty certain that my 9.1 copy is a more general retail version. Don't have the disk in front of me now, and can't readily recall what the disk looks like.

And I seem to recall that OS 9.1 is a now a free download from Apple's site. Maybe that's where I got my copy?

I also remember trying various other OS.s on my SM, and later found a site clearly stating that this model will not support any OS's over 9.1. So unfortunately, 9.2, 9.2.1, and 9.2.2 are out of the question.

Cheers,

Bill

Jim,

If you put MacOS 9 on your SM300/160, you'd better be ready for a really
sluggish computer (hense frustrating). I found a SM4000/200 (604e, 64megs
RAM), that had MacOS 9.1 on it. I'm tryign to find a friend who'll give it a
home now. IT IS painfully slow. I normally use a Powerbook G3/266/384 Ram
(which was recently stolen), and the feeling is like going from a Corvette
to a Ford Escort - maybe worse. Besides, Apple's been making Mac-specific
Packaged system OS CD for years now; it's probably only installable on your
particular G4, so it's useless to you (yes, MacOS 9). If I were you, I'd
download MacOS 8.6 (All Pre-MacOS-X system SW now available for download on
Apples website - free) and let well enough alone.

I have two computers in the house. This one is a Starmax 3000/160--seven
years old. Last year I bought a Mac G4 but still use the Starmax (actually,
my wife uses it more since most of her school programs are compatible with
it). Anyway, I have recently upgraded to Panther on the G4 and will be using
that OS exclusively on that machine. The question is: can I now put the OS9
system that came with the G4 on this Starmax, and will it work? Thanks.
