This sounds right. The battery leads are long and it's impossible to loop them given the position of the battery -- it's barely visible,
But about disconnecting *all* the wires -- I have disconnected everything I can see -- the 4 power plugs, the wide ribbon things, the small plugs for fan, etc. I can't see what's preventing the m-board from sliding all the way out. Should I unscrew the 4 screws at the other end also?
I want you all to know that I appreciate the generous help you've offered. I just hate to put the good old Starmax out on the street on trash day just because of a little battery problem. (I'm 75 and in good health -- maybe I'm taking this personally.)
With the case cover off and the wires disconnected the MB should slide the rest of the way out. IIRC, in the area with the ribbon cables, there is also a cable for sound from the CD-ROM drive. If you use a flashlight to look into the case, you might find the last item that is causing the MB to stick.
