Thanks to those who suggested solutions to my battery questions. (SM 5000
250. Here is my final report -- good news and bad news.

Good news: After reinstalling the battery --properly this time -- I pressed
the cuda button & started up. Worked OK. I cabled up my scis Zip and copied
some files I have been needing.

Bad news -- I shut down from the keyboard. The only way I can restart is
holding down the CUDA button for quite a while -- 30 seconds or longer.
Keyboard and CPU switch are useless. Screen goes dark after a few seconds.

I believe I have ruled out a dead battery as the only culprit. Apparently
there is another hardware problem -- and I don't have the motivation or
patience to pursue this further. I give up.

However I have accomplished my main goal -- retrieving some needed files and
trashing certain others. I am now content to discard the Starmax. I have a
G4 that works OK -- time to move on.

Again, many thanks, SM list participants. You are great folks.
