From my 5000 MT. My Max came with ethernet card already factory installed, so I can't vouch for selecting, installing or where it would go in a 3000/4000 desktop. Telcontar makes good points about resetting the CUDA and trying different slots with your card if necessary. Take care if you have a PCI bridge that all the cards and connections are well seated.

I did look at the Profiler and my ethernet card does not show up in the Devices and Volumes panel. The other PCI cards I have _do_ show up there.

Instead, it shows up in the System Profile under Network overview. Roughly, it says,
Ethernet PCI Slot [H1E1] then Link: n/a Speed: n/a Duplex: n/a
LocalTalk (printer) built-in: n/a

Under File sharing: is on, and more blah blah
blah blah
Active network port(s): Ethernet PCI Slot [H1E1] Hardware Address: long hexadecimal number

Then, TCP/IP is installed and active.
Under that are Netmask, IP address, gateway, Nameserver address all reflecting that my Max is connected to a router.

With File sharing on, and whole volumes set to share, I can open up Connect to Server with my OS X machine (your powerbook) and mount whole volumes on my desktop. (My Max has three hard drives divided up into about 12 volumes. I know, it's a messy desktop.)

There was/is a site titled something like Two Macs and a Printer that I found helpful many years ago. I don't know where it is now.

This may not be particularly germane to your situation, but perhaps some of the pertinent details will assist you. Don't give up. It's slick to have my four primary machines sharing a LAN (Local Area Network).

I don't know - sounds to me like the machine's PCI settings are scrambled.
