Thanks for the suggestion, but I don't think I can use linux-iscsi. Their supported kernel versions are quite old. I'm running Gentoo which takes pretty much the opposite approach to kernel support as RHEL. They prefer minimally patched current kernel releases to RHEL's older kernels with security fixes and key features backported. I could just run a RHEL kernel, but I also like to follow recent developments in reiser4.
Anyway, the linux-iscsi project merged with open-iscsi some time ago, so open-iscsi is the natural successor. The page you linked even recommends open-iscsi.
