More info for those who might still be interested... Upgraded to b83a, still have the same problem.
I decided to give up for the time being on the CIFS server and built Samba 3.0.28 from source. Fired up smbd and had the exact same problem... very poor read, multiple open files read quickly, writes are consistently fast. Something else I tried... my home directory on the server is on the boot disk, not in the ZFS volume (just trying to isolate the problem). I tried mounting my Samba-shared home directory and copying from the share to my workstation, still no luck. I've got no clue what's going on here, but my best guess is that there's some funky I/O problem between Samba/CIFS and the kernel. I should also mention that I'm certain this isn't a networking issue. NFS and SCP reads are consistently fast.
