IIRC, you said that you see the same behavior from both Samba and
the CIFS service> Perhaps this has something to do with your network
interface/driver.  We have tried to reproduce this and none of our
systems (various SPARC and x86 systems) exhibit this behavior.
Can you try this on a different system?
