Ah, DNS.

Yes, you have to configure DNS.  Specifically:

 - you need a /etc/resolv.conf that lists:
    - a domain name or a searchlist where the AD domain-to-be-joined is
      included
    - nameserver addresses that can resolve names in that AD domain
