Julian seems to be out for the moment, so let me step into the discussion.

If I get it right, you have a Solaris NFS/NIS/CIFS server, AD server and 
UNIX/Windows workstations.

It is definitely possible to work on the same files from Windows as well 
as UNIX workstations. Well, I'm not sure about the windows ACLs when 
accessed through NFS. But there should be no problem with owner/group.
