The 2540 is obviously a lot cheaper.  If you don't need the extra 
enterprise features and additional host ports provided by the 6140, 
you can purchase two or three top-end 2540s (not the 2501 SAS 
expansion chassis) for the same price and end up with two or three 
times the total performance.  The 2501 SAS expansion chassis allows 
adding more storage capacity and IOPS via the same host ports but is 
unlikely to improve raw I/O throughput very much at all since it is 
limited to a SAS channel (3GBit) and total throughput seems to be 
limited by controller bandwidth (particularly for writes) rather than 
the drives.
